Serving the Community

I have always enjoyed helping out those who are less fortunate. One of my favorite experiences in doing this was when my teammates and I traveled to Tijuana, Mexico to help an orphanage. This really touched me, because life down there is much harder than the life that we get to live in America. There were many broken hearts of people that I came in contact with, but we were able to serve and pray for them.

I also serve part time at Hutchinson Middle School right here in La Mirada, California. This school is less than a mile from Biola's campus, and I usually try and go over there during their recess and lunch time. I like doing this because those kids look up to me, especially because I am a college athlete. I get to play basketball and soccer with them, while also getting to know them and hearing about their lives. Potentially I am looking for the opportunity to share the gospel with them, because that is the most important thing that someone could hear.

Taking a deep breath

There are times when I like to get away from the busy parts of my life, and just take a deep breath. Since moving to Southern California I have learned to enjoy the beach as a nice get away. I grew up in a family that was obsessed with Disney, and I have visited more times than I can remember. Since I only live 15 minutes away now, I make the most out of my proximity and enjoy Walt's creation of Disneyland.

My name is Gabe Ihrig, and I am currently in my Senior year at Biola University. I am a Business Major with an emphasis in Marketing Management. Originally I am from Puyallup, Washington (40 miles south of Seattle), but I transferred to Biola in the fall of 2015. I am on a baseball scholarship for Biola after playing at Lower Columbia Junior College for two years. I am the second oldest in a family of six with my older sister Emily being 24, younger sister Anna being 19, and younger brother Alec being 16. I grew up in an extremely strong Christian household, and continue to be rooted in my Christian faith.

My parents have been amazing to me my entire life and I look up to them both very much. My dad is one of my biggest role models for all that he does for our family, with my mom not working my dad is the only source of income for a rather large family. My dad is the CEO of Fired Up! Culture, which is his own consulting firm where he is hired on by executives of both non-profit and profitable businesses. His job is to go in and advise them on the need to change their culture in order to run a more successful business with higher moral and ethical standards. He finds his ministry in this business by being able to help others get out of their own way, because a lot of the time they do not realize it. I work for him now with an office down in Anaheim, and I hope to use my business degree to partner up with him down the road.

God has blessed me with success in my past on the baseball field by being on the #3 ranked high school team in the country, and the #4 ranked Junior college team in the country, while being named team captain of both. Now I am at Biola and looking forward to the next opportunity that God presents in front of me.
